Local medical SEO: showing up on Google and in ChatGPT in Douala

Google Business Profile, pages per specialty and neighbourhood, MedicalClinic markup, content signed by doctors: the method to be found and quoted locally.

Short answer

For a clinic to appear on Google and be quoted by AI assistants, it needs a complete Google Business Profile, pages per specialty and neighbourhood, medical Schema.org markup, content signed by identified practitioners and identical information across the web. Real Google reviews and a structured FAQ complete the setup.

Key takeaways

  • The Google Business Profile is your first local shop window
  • One page per specialty and neighbourhood matches how patients search
  • MedicalClinic and FAQPage markup help Google and AI understand your services
  • AI tools quote sources that are consistent, signed and verifiable

Patients search in two ways. On Google, they type "gynaecologist Akwa" or "clinic open Sunday Douala". More and more, they ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity: "which clinic for an ultrasound in Douala?". Local SEO makes you appear in the first case; GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) gets you quoted in the second. Both rest on the same foundations.

1. The Google Business Profile, your first shop window

The exact primary category (clinic, dental practice, laboratory), secondary categories, daily hours, real photos of reception and equipment, a list of services and a booking link. Post an update every month. The profile must carry exactly the same name, address and phone number as the website.

2. One page per specialty and per neighbourhood

Patients search for a specialty in a place. Build one solid page per specialty, then local pages for the neighbourhoods and towns you genuinely serve. Each local page must bring its own information: access, parking, doctors present that day. Copy-pasted pages that only change the neighbourhood name are ignored by Google.

3. Medical Schema.org markup

We add structured data to the code of every page: MedicalClinic or Dentist for the facility, Physician for each doctor, MedicalSpecialty for specialties, FAQPage for frequently asked questions and BreadcrumbList for navigation. These tags tell Google and AI tools, without ambiguity, who you are, where you are and what you do.

4. Content that answers, signed by doctors

On health topics, Google gives particular weight to the author’s experience and expertise. An article titled "When should you have an ultrasound during pregnancy?" signed by your gynaecologist, with their profile and qualifications, is worth far more than anonymous text. Open every article with a short two- or three-sentence answer: it’s the format Google shows as a snippet and AI tools reuse. That is the heart of AEO, presented in AEO.

5. Identical information everywhere

AI tools cross-check sources. If your address differs between the website, Google, Facebook and directories, they hesitate to quote you. Audit every mention of you online and align them.

6. Open the door to AI crawlers

Your site’s robots.txt file must allow crawlers such as GPTBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended if you want to be quoted. Add an llms.txt file summarising your facility, specialties and contact details in a simple format. We detail this method in GEO.

7. Reviews, collected honestly

After each visit, send a Google review link on WhatsApp. Reply to every review, including negative ones, courteously and without ever disclosing medical information. Never buy reviews.

The 90-day plan

  • Weeks 1 and 2: complete Google Business Profile, align contact details
  • Weeks 3 to 6: specialty pages rewritten as answers, doctor profiles, markup
  • Weeks 7 to 10: local pages, tagged FAQ, robots.txt and llms.txt
  • Weeks 11 and 12: first signed articles, automated review requests, measurement

Frequently asked questions

How long before local SEO shows results?

The first effects on Google Maps often appear within a few weeks if the profile is well optimised. Rankings for specialty pages build over three to six months.

Does a clinic need a blog?

A useful one, yes: two articles a month that answer real patient questions, signed by your doctors. That’s the content Google and AI tools pick up.

Can we buy reviews to go faster?

No. It breaks Google’s rules and risks suspension of your profile. Ask for a review after each visit instead, through a link sent on WhatsApp.
